What's On My Bookshelf

Farm City by Novella Carpenter

A woman tells her story of living in the ghetto of Oakland, CA, while having a garden on someone else's property next door, raising chickens, bees, turkeys, ducks, geese, and pigs in her small backyard.  She feeds the animals from the local dumpsters, takes care of them, and once they are grown, she's got dinner.

I really liked that she used her resources around her and didn't insanely overpay for all the animal supplies people say you "need."

Room by Emma Donoghue

What if all you've ever known was the inside of one room?  That you never knew there was an outside world?  That is the life of Jack, a five year old boy.  His mother was abducted by a man who locked her up in a shed for 7 years where she gave birth to Jack.

The book is written from Jack's point-of-view which makes it a very interesting read.  It is creative and imaginative while being totally horrifying.  The book tells the story of their life in the room and their escape.
